Military Breakfast & Learn with Huben Phillips

Leadership Isn't a Résumé Bullet Point You say you can lead. Can you prove it when the rank comes off? Featuring Fleet Command Master Chief Huben Phillips, USN (Ret.) Senior Manager, Organizational and Leadership Development HII Newport News Shipbuilding Workshop Summary Every military leader leaves the service believing they bring leadership to the civilian workplace. But what does that really mean to the people who might hire you? After more than 34 years in the Navy, culminating as Fleet Command Master Chief of U.S. Second Fleet, Huben Phillips didn't just put leadership on his résumé. He made it his next career. Today, at Newport News Shipbuilding, developing leaders and strengthening organizations is his profession. Huben takes us inside the difference between holding authority and building leadership capability that delivers results. He'll challenge familiar assumptions about military experience, explain why even the strongest vision fails without buy-in from the people doing the work, and explore what makes leadership valuable in a civilian organization. You already know how to lead in uniform. The question is whether you know how to make that experience count without it. What You'll Take Away Stop selling your rank. Start demonstrating your value. Understand what civilian organizations actually need from leaders and how your military experience can meet those needs. Know the difference between authority and influence. Explore why top-down direction only succeeds when the people doing the work are invested in the outcome. Turn experience into organizational impact. Learn to think beyond the leadership positions you've held and focus on the people, teams, and results you can develop. About Huben Phillips Huben Phillips is Senior Manager for Organizational and Leadership Development at HII Newport News Shipbuilding. A retired U.S. Navy Fleet Command Master Chief with more than 34 years of service, his final assignments included Fleet Command Master Chief of U.S. Second Fleet and Senior Enlisted Leader at Joint Force Command Norfolk. He holds a Master of Science in Human Resource Management from Touro University. Today, he applies his experience in leadership, organizational culture, and workforce development to strengthening leaders and organizations in one of America's most demanding industrial environments.
